Biblioteca de Poker

En estos últimos 3 años, he comprado de a poco algunos libros de poker, logrando formar actualmente una pequeña biblioteca de 61 libros. No los he leído todos, pero voy avanzando ha medida de que el tiempo me lo permite.

Cuando comencé a interesarme seriamente en el poker, no sabía como aprender a jugar bien. De ahi tomé conocimiento de que algunos jugadores de poker habían escrito hace tiempo libros de poker, considerados algunos de ellos como verdaderos libros sagrados, tales como Super System de Doyle Brunson. Luego de enterarme de ello, ingresé a sitios web de poker donde se señalaban cuales eran los mejores libros de poker y sobre que materias trataban. Luego me enteré de la existencia del sitio web www.amazon.com y me di cuenta de que la mayoría de los libros de poker estaban ahí y de que algunos de ellos estaban escaneados en la parte del índice, pudiendo ver el contenido de cada uno de ellos. Obviamente todos los libros estaban en inglés, pero mi pasión por aprender poker era tan grande que en ese momento me hubiera dado lo mismo que estuviesen escrito en árabe o chino mandarín. Mi nivel de inglés era regular/malo, pero sabía que con algo de esfuerzo la cosa iba a salir bien. Afortunadamente los libros de Brunson y Sklansky traen en su parte posterior un glosario con el significado de las palabras técnicas del poker, así que las anoté en un papel aparte y cada vez que iba teniendo dudas, lo consultaba, y por supuesto iba agregando otras, todo ello con la ayuda de un diccionario. Evidentemente que al comienzo avanzaba 1 página cada dos horas, pero con el tiempo fui mejorando.

Cuando llegó el momento de elegir que libros comprar primero, me di cuenta que en amazon las personas que compraban un libro dejaban habitualmente comentarios sobre el libro así que me di el trabajo de leer todos los comentarios de cada libro que me parecía interesante. Ahi supe que David Sklanky era como una especie de Albert Einstein de la ciencia del poker; Doyle Brunson, una leyenda viviente del poker, que había escrito la biblia del poker; también el gran reconocimiento que los lectores hacían de las obras de Ed Miller, Phil Gordon, Dan Harrington, y muchos otros.

Los primeros dos libros que compré fueron The Theory of Poker, de David Sklanky catalogado por los estudiantes de poker como el primer libro que todo jugador debe leer antes de siquiera tocar las cartas; y Hold'em poker for Advanced Players, también de Sklanky. Respecto a este último libro pensé que era sobre no limit hold'em, pero me equivoqué al comprarlo ya que era sobre limit hold'em. Mucho tiempo después me di cuenta de que pese a que el libro es sobre limit hold'em, las nociones que contiene son tan fundamentales, que son necesarias para todo jugador de texas hold'em, y que los conceptos de limit hold'em te ayudan a entender mejor la estrategia de no limit. De ahi que le tomé algo de aprecio a limit hold'em por sobre el no limit.

De ahi en adelante seguí adquiriendo más libros sobre poker, aprovechando además los puntos de jugador frecuente de Poker Stars, los cuales utilizaba para canjearlos por libros, particularmente sobre Omaha, que era la variante que más me interesaba, también sobre Texas Hold'em, y libros sobre teoría general.

Los libros no fueron para mi la llave directa a ser un mejor jugador de lo que era antes, pero si fueron la pieza clave que me separó del resto de los jugadores que no conocían los fundamentos del juego y que solo habían aprendido poker mirando la televisión. Los libros sobre teoría general del poker fueron muy importantes para mi, ya que me enseñaron la filosofía que hay detrás de juego y los conceptos escenciales del poker aplicables a cualquier variante.
